Hood’s Eruption

Updated: Apr 10, 2019

He has been on display at times since his acquisition, but this morning Rodney Hood was on full display for the Portland Trail Blazers. Scoring a season-high 27 points with all 27 coming in the second half of today's 118-108 defeat of the Charlotte Hornets.

He did it from a little bit of everywhere on the court in this early morning game on Sunday. Scoring off pick and roll, iso, from the mid-range, floaters and one shot coming from wayyy deep. #LogoHood? Hood finished 9-14 from the field, 3-6 from 3pt and had a near posterizing dunk where a replay should contact but the call on the floor was a no foul.

These were all of the things you’d hope to see from Hood after acquiring him earlier this season. He finished out the game helping his Blazers get their sixth win in seven games which now includes 5 on the road. His final two points were scored at the line for two late free throws to ice the game.

This is an obvious high for Hood and after a hot start to his Blazers tenure, we’ve seen a few lows as well. Scoring a total of 16 points in the 5 games before today’s scoring clinic. It’s encouraging to see and you hope he can continue to ride this scoring streak into a few more games as the Trail Blazers look to lock up home court in the first round. I heed an optimistic warning. We might see a few more of those quiet games in the last 18 than these high scoring ones like today. The optimism comes because these kinds of nights won’t always be needed every given night. As now seen though, it can happen. These are the kind of performances that can tilt a close playoff series. Having someone that can come in and get hot for a 20 plus outing should help drastically when teams are looking to bottle up Dame and live with CJ being the only one able to score on that end of the floor. On this road trip we’ve seen huge impact performances from Kanter, Nurk, CJ, Dame, Moe and now Hood. This is just another demonstration of the depth Portland now has on this Roster. The playoffs are still more than a month out but this team is proving to have multiple guys they can lean on to get wins and that is something any Trail Blazer fan should be enthusiastic about.

With this win, the Trail Blazers improve to 39-24 on the season. For a team looking for a 50 win season, its magic number is now 11 with 19 games left. They’ll look to add one more to the win column when the wrap up this 7 game road trip against the Memphis Grizzlies Tuesday, March fifth. Tip-off is scheduled for 5pm.
